Bishop Cotton School is the oldest
boys boarding school located in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. The school was
founded on 28 July 1859 by Bishop George Edward Lynch Cotton. This boarding
school was opened for students on 15th March 1863. In the beginning, only 35
boys were admitted, and the school incremented its vigour to 65 students by the
year 1864. It is affiliated to the CISCE, New Delhi, an all-India Board. The
Council administers two public examinations – The Indian Certificate of
Secondary Education (ICSE) at the cessation of Class X and, The Indian School
Certificate (ISC) at the cessation of Class XII.
The school actively emboldens co-curricular and
extra-curricular activities. Debating and elocution are astronomically popular
where the school trains and polishes students in public verbalizing. Drama and
other stage activities are performed every year and the whole student body
participates in inter-house competitions, besides a host of other programs on
stage. Students are withal trained in operating and maintaining sound and light
equipment.
The Nature Club, Meteorological Club, Ingenious
Inscribing Club, Middle Scholastic Book Reading Club, Automobile Club, and The
Quizzing Club withal contributes to developing varied intrigues in the students.
The outward-bound activities of the school are
mountaineering, rock climbing, obstruction course, NCC, tours, and treks. The school is withal part of the
International Awards for Puerile People awarded by the Duke of Edinburgh Award
Scheme.
Over the years the school has developed
infrastructure for several games and sports like Cricket, Hockey, Soccer, and
Swimming is played seasonally and tennis, squash, table-tennis, badminton,
basketball, volleyball. Athletics,
gymnastics and physical training are popular among the boys. Boxing and marathon running are sports that
visually perceive the participation of every single medically fit boy of the
school.
The school has huge ground playing fields, a
shooting range, a gymnasium and facilities for indoor sports. The coaches are
specialists, trained and national-level players who supervise, coach and train
the boys for excellence and guide them to triumphs at tournaments.
Each sporting season organizes an inter-house
and then an inter-school tournament attended by the best teams of the region.
The program not only develops the physical stamina, coordination, and skills of
the students but additionally develops team spirit, honourable sportsmanship,
victoriously triumphing with humility and losing with dignity.
